In the past 2-300 years, there have been many theories of colour in science but most artists develop their use of colour mainly on the basis of their own experience or through the experience of other artists; few study colour theory directly.
My own work has benefited greatly from both an understanding of the theory of colour and my own experience. The reason why I study colour from a scientific point of view is that the impact on us of science, a dominant force in our society, is huge.
One of my objectives is to try and bring science and art as close together as possible. The artist and the scientist observe the same world from different points of view. For example, the artist can see the beauty, harmony, rhythm of colour. The scientist is interested in the physical properties of light/ colour while an artist is interested in its emotional impact.
