Erica Middleton
My highly personal paintings are like a visual diary. Recent work explores the nature of certain foods and cutlery. I use pure pigments, making my own oil paints as these maximize high chroma contrast whilst facilitating a wide range of distinctiveness within the neutrals.
Much work involves areas of gilding, using 23 carat gold, silver and copper leaf. The work is multi-layered – the depiction of food and cutlery alluding to symbolic connections such as spiritual sustenance, well-being or menace. The formal arrangements are important – balance and dynamism are aimed for through carefully placed objects and colour relationships.
