Tom Hughes
The primary concern of my work is the continuum of the critical elements embodied within the ever evolving yet formal practice of painting. The main function of my practice is to challenge the relationships of colour and composition within the restraint of a 2D forum. Through painting, printmaking and 2D painted relief/sculpture each work or project is fundamentally an expression of the material; for example, the primary concern of my painting is to explore the values of paint.
The theme of my research is generally motivated by relationships or the way humans interrelate. These ideas are carried forward by exploration of surface through the materials.
It is precisely this conflict of opinion; the freedom of thought within creativity and then the binding restrictions which have to be thoroughly explored before moving forward. I mean simply (pictorially) to crystallize the living idea of the creative thought.
